Later Moves Quickly: A Motherhood Reflection

Hi, I’m Casia, and these are my girls.

This time last year, all I wanted was portraits together. Nothing extravagant. No fancy handbags or jewelry. Give me a home-cooked meal, a few plants for my garden, a handwritten card, and photographs I can hold onto forever, and my heart is full.

These images from last Mother’s Day are finally processed, and honestly I hope I never wait that long again. They are just too meaningful.

As a Tucson family photographer, I spend so much of myself caring for everyone else’s memories. I pour into my clients, preserve their stories, and ensure their moments are beautifully documented. Yet somehow, my own images are often the ones left sitting on hard drives, waiting for “someday.”

And if I’m being honest, that feels a lot like motherhood too.

A Gentle Reminder To Be Present in the Frame

So many of us instinctively place ourselves at the bottom of the list. Our children’s needs, our families, our home, our work… everything comes first. We tell ourselves we’ll get to our own needs later. We’ll rest later. We’ll be in the photos later.

But later moves quickly.

Preserving This Season Before It Changes

Looking back at these images now, I don’t see perfection. I see connection. I see the way my daughter held onto me in this season. The tiny expressions that have already changed. The tenderness of ordinary moments I already miss.

That’s why these photographs matter so much to me.

Connection Over Perfection

Lately, I’ve been trying to care for myself in quieter, gentler ways. Morning walks with Luna before the house fully wakes up. Making a warm breakfast instead of rushing into the day. Slowing down enough to breathe. Ending the evening with an early dinner, time on the front porch swing at dusk, and going to bed by nine has felt like a personality upgrade.

Small things, really.
But they’ve reminded me that caring for ourselves isn’t selfish. It allows us to show up more fully for the people we love most.

As a Tucson motherhood photographer, I know how quickly these seasons change. That’s why I believe so deeply in preserving them, not perfectly, but honestly and with intention.

So this is your reminder too, mama:
Get in the photos.
Prioritize the memories.
Take the walk.
Rest when you can.
Celebrate the season you’re in before it slips quietly into the next.

P.S. Nova and I took these photos ourselves with a tripod, a hand remote, and a whole lot of laughing while trying very hard not to accidentally crop off our heads or get slobber kisses from you know who.
